Mareeba Shire, as it currently exists, is undivided i.e. there are no divisions. For those who have lived (and voted here) over a period of years may remember that this has not always been the case. An argument could be put forward as to the positive and negative aspects of divisional representation; however, at this point in time it would seem to be moot in that the Tablelands Regional Council will be divided into eight (8) divisions spread across an area of approximately 65,000 square kilometres.
What this means to you as a voter is that, regardless of where you are enrolled within the Tablelands Regional Council area, you will given the opportunity to vote for one (1) only Councillor (for your respective Division) and one (1) vote for the Mayor. Understandably some confusion has arisen given that previously voters in Mareeba Shire have elected all eight Councillors from one ballot paper. This is no longer the case. Following the completion of the election, the new Tablelands Regional Council will consist of eight (8) Councillors and a Mayor.
It is understood that the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) will forward a letter to all voters across the state advising them of which local government area and Division they are enrolled and also the location of the polling booths for that Division for the casting of votes on polling day.
Essentially, the town of Mareeba is divided into four (4) Divisions. The majority of the town falls within Division 7.To further assist in the process of identification of the various Divisions you will find below maps for each of the Divisions adjoining Mareeba. Each map shows, in detail, each property within that Division. Alternatively, this link will take you to the ECQ website www.ecq.qld.gov.au/elections/2008/default.html which allows you to enter your property address and have it located on a map which identifies your Division as well as the location of the polling booths within that Division.
